Sternal cleft is a rare congenital malformation caused by partial or complete failure of the sternum to fuse during embryonic development. Superior clefts are usually isolated, whereas total clefts are often associated with syndromes and show a 8% incidence of heart defects. Although it is easily identifiable at birth, one-third of cases are not diagnosed until the first year of life.
