Incidence of neurocysticercosis in patients with epilepsy from the state of Alagoas

The neurocysticercosis is a disease that aff ects the central nervous system, caused by the presence of taenia solium larvae that body, which can cause seizures and go on to develop epilepsy. Cysticercosis is a parasitic disease that is related to hygienic and sanitary conditions of the population. The aim of this study was to observe the incidence of neurocysticercosis in patients with epilepsy treated at the epilepsy clinic of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Alagoas. A standardized form with identifi cation data, eating habits, semiology of seizures, neurological examinations and was applied. The study included 107 patients where 51.4% developed symptomatic epilepsy, these two were diagnosed with neurocysticercosis, which carried the HIV virus. Given the data collected there was a large decrease in cases of neurocysticercosis associated with epilepsy, which may have occurred to better housing with sanitation, health information and surveillance.
